{"id":22121,"date":"2026-04-07T03:43:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=22121"},"modified":"2026-04-19T06:55:28","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:55:28","slug":"saba-urges-south-african-players-to-use-only-regulated-betting-operators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/saba-urges-south-african-players-to-use-only-regulated-betting-operators","title":{"rendered":"SABA urges South African players to use only regulated betting operators"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Industry body warns that illegal offshore gambling sites expose millions of South African players to unpaid winnings, fraud and limited legal recourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- The <strong>South African Bookmakers Association<\/strong> (SABA) has urged South African consumers to verify the licensing status of online gambling platforms and use only <strong>regulated operators<\/strong>, warning that illegal offshore sites expose players to significant risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association said players should ensure that betting platforms clearly display their <strong>legal licensing details<\/strong>, including the name of the registered operator and the relevant provincial gambling board responsible for oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SABA CEO <strong>Sean Coleman <\/strong>said: \u201cA significant proportion of online gambling activities continue to operate outside the safeguards of the regulated system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to research commissioned by SABA and conducted by gambling intelligence firm YieldSec, <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/saba-sounds-alarm-on-illegal-online-betting-in-south-africa\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/saba-sounds-alarm-on-illegal-online-betting-in-south-africa\">62 per cent of online gambling activity in South Africa <\/a>occurs on illegal platforms, with more than R50bn (\u20ac2.5bn) in gross gambling revenue flowing offshore each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study also found that around 16 million South Africans used <strong>illegal gambling platforms<\/strong> in the past 12 months, highlighting the scale of the issue. Researchers also identified more than 2,000 unlicensed gambling websites targeting South African consumers online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coleman warned that consumers who use unlicensed platforms face serious risks. \u201cThere is no guarantee that winnings will be paid out and players have no recourse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to SABA, licensed gambling operators must comply with <strong>strict regulatory safeguards<\/strong>, including age verification requirements, anti-money-laundering controls and responsible gambling measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illegal operators, by contrast, often advertise <strong>foreign licences<\/strong> from jurisdictions such as Cura\u00e7ao, Malta, Gibraltar or the Philippines, which do not authorise them to offer gambling services in South Africa.
