In an article published on March 21 to mark Human Rights Day, the Foundation urged operators to go beyond basic regulatory compliance and ensure that gambling practices do not compromise the rights to dignity, safety and informed decision-making.

According to the report, fair play is defined not only by adherence to rules but also by how clearly risks are communicated and how accessible support systems are for affected individuals.

Operators are expected to disclose key information such as betting odds, potential losses and the built-in advantage known as the house edge. In South Africa, this margin can average around 5 per cent in some gambling activities, meaning long-term player losses are likely. Without clear disclosure, players may assume equal chances of winning despite systems designed to favour operators over time.

The report highlights that failure to communicate these probabilities limits informed participation. Where players do not fully understand the risks, the balance between operator profit and consumer protection shifts, raising concerns about fairness.

Ethical responsibility also extends to how gambling products are structured and presented. Limited transparency or complex systems can reduce player awareness, increasing the likelihood of financial harm. This places additional pressure on operators to ensure clarity in all aspects of their offerings.

Operators are further required to contribute to harm reduction efforts, such as supporting counselling, treatment and public awareness initiatives for individuals and families affected by gambling-related harm. Industry-backed interventions form a key part of the broader consumer protection framework.

Furthermore, internal safeguards such as staff training, responsible gambling policies and early identification of harmful behaviour are expected to be standard practice across licensed operations.

The SARGF’s position affirms that operator accountability remains central to maintaining fairness in the gambling sector, with transparency and consumer protection expected to remain key regulatory priorities as the industry evolves.

   See also:

See also: NWGB partners national regulator on underage gambling campaign in Matlosana

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has urged iGaming operators to surpass basic regulatory compliance, advocating for enhanced player protection, fairness, and transparency.
