Malawi.- The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA)<\/strong> has allocated K300m<\/strong> (\u20ac158,000) to support Malawi\u2019s 2025\/26 Lean Season and Emergency Response Programmes<\/strong>, positioning the country\u2019s gambling regulator as a major contributor to national disaster relief efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funding was formally presented on March 21 in Mangochi<\/strong>, where MAGLA Board chairperson Proud Chalira<\/strong> said the intervention follows an appeal by President Arthur Peter Mutharika<\/strong> for financial and material assistance after a state of disaster was declared. The declaration was linked to prolonged dry spells that have disrupted food production and increased food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chalira stated that MAGLA\u2019s contribution falls within its statutory and corporate responsibility framework, which directs a portion of proceeds from regulated gaming activities to public interest causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the event, Chief Secretary to the Malawi government, Justin Saidi<\/strong>, described the funding as timely, noting that it would support ongoing relief operations coordinated by the government and its partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The donation is expected to be channelled through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA)<\/strong> to support food distribution, emergency supplies and recovery efforts. The agency is supporting about 4 million<\/strong> food-insecure individuals, alongside more than 21,000 households<\/strong> affected by recent heavy rains and flooding, which has intensified the humanitarian situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MAGLA\u2019s intervention highlights the role of regulated gambling institutions in national development frameworks, particularly in emerging markets where public financing gaps exist.<\/p>\n\n\n
