Municipal employees learnt about the risks associated with problem gambling.

South Africa.- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB), in partnership with the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), has conducted a responsible gambling awareness workshop under the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.

The session focused on informing municipal employees about the risks associated with gambling and the importance of early intervention. According to the organisers, the initiative forms part of ongoing industry efforts to reduce gambling-related harm and promote responsible participation.

During the workshop, an NWGB representative outlined common indicators of problem gambling. These include borrowing money to gamble, neglecting work responsibilities, attempting to recover losses through continued betting and withdrawing from family or social circles. The presentation also addressed the risks linked to illegal gambling operations, noting that unregulated platforms expose individuals to financial loss without consumer protection.

The SARGF team expanded on behavioural patterns by explaining three broad categories of gamblers: individuals who gamble in moderation, social gamblers who set limits and problem gamblers who experience difficulty controlling their habits. The organisation emphasised that gambling addiction is a recognised behavioural disorder but can be managed with timely support.

Both organisations highlighted the availability of support systems. SARGF operates a national helpline offering free counselling and referral services for individuals affected by gambling addiction. Employees were informed that assistance is accessible through the toll-free number 0800 006 008.

The workshop also reinforced regulatory compliance and reporting mechanisms. Participants were encouraged to report suspected illegal gambling activities to law enforcement or directly to NWGB through its official communication channels.

The engagement aligns with established regulatory mandates to ensure a safer gambling environment in South Africa. Industry stakeholders, including regulators and support organisations, continue to prioritise awareness campaigns within workplaces and communities as part of harm reduction strategies. Further similar sessions are expected as part of ongoing collaboration between public institutions and gambling oversight bodies.
