He noted that while the industry continues to expand, some operators are not fully complying with legal requirements, creating social risks.

The association confirmed that inspection teams will assess operator compliance with licensing conditions and identify unlawful gaming activities. Regulatory agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Commission, the Immigration Department and local councils, will participate in the exercise. Any illegal gaming machines found will be confiscated and secured in designated council-approved storage facilities.

The inspections follow a meeting between the association and officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to strengthen oversight within the sector. Secretary-General Darius Sinkamba added that with the commencement of enforcement operations, any operator found in breach of the law will face regulatory action. He emphasised that compliance is necessary to protect the integrity and sustainability of the gambling market.

Zambia’s betting sector is regulated by the Betting Control and Licensing Board in coordination with relevant government ministries. In recent years, the market has expanded, driven by the rising popularity of sports betting and digital gaming platforms.

However, industry growth has also increased regulatory pressure to ensure responsible gambling practices and adherence to tax and licensing requirements. Authorities have previously indicated plans to modernise gambling legislation to address online betting and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

The association maintains that stronger compliance measures are necessary to balance industry growth with consumer protection. The current inspections mark a coordinated effort between industry leadership and enforcement bodies to reinforce lawful operations and address concerns surrounding gambling addiction in Zambia’s betting market.

   See also:

See also: Ugandan gambling regulator destroys 409 illegal gaming machines

Association President Noah Malungila said the rapid growth of betting activity across the country has been accompanied by signs of increasing gambling dependency.

The Zambia Gaming Association has initiated nationwide inspections of betting and gaming operators to address rising gambling dependency and non-compliance with licensing conditions.
