Malawi.- Police in Malawi\u2019s Central West Region<\/strong>, in partnership with the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA)<\/strong>, have launched a targeted campaign to prevent children under 18 from participating in gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative, known as the Stop Child Gambling Campaign<\/strong>, aims to protect minors from betting environments and address the wider social consequences of early exposure to gambling. It also tackles growing concerns over \u201cstreet gaming\u201d and minors visiting betting shops during school hours, amid the expansion of both local and international betting platforms in Malawi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the campaign launch, Central West Region police commissioner Mavuto M\u2019bobo <\/strong>emphasised the urgent need to keep those under 18 away from gambling. He noted that such activities disrupt education and can push young people towards criminal behaviour, including theft and fraud, as they attempt to finance their habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nancy Malata<\/strong>, MAGLA\u2019s Public Relations Officer and spokesperson, highlighted that the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 2022<\/strong> explicitly bans anyone under 18 <\/strong>from participating in any form of gambling. She called on parents and guardians to actively supervise their children and prevent access to these activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event featured a solidarity walk from Community Ground<\/strong> to Area 3 Police Central West Headquarters in Lilongwe<\/strong>, bringing together stakeholders to demonstrate their shared commitment to responsible gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign includes wide-ranging education and outreach initiatives, such as school programs, community workshops, public awareness campaigns and sessions to inform parents, teachers and community leaders. MAGLA and the police have pledged ongoing community visits to highlight the impact of gambling addiction on mental health, academic performance and future prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n
