Egypt.- The Egyptian government has announced plans to block access to online betting applications as part of measures to regulate digital content and protect users. MP Ahmed Badawy, Head of the Communications and Information Technology Committee in the House of Representatives, revealed the move during a session on February 8. The policy targets apps that promote gambling, with officials citing risks of financial and social harm, particularly for younger users.

Badawy said the blocking would begin within days and that no affected apps would be allowed to resume operations in Egypt. The government aims to close legal gaps that have allowed these platforms to operate without effective oversight.

New draft legislation is also being prepared to introduce penalties for applications that encourage betting, with the goal of preventing them from reappearing. Under the proposed rules, every electronic platform operating in Egypt must appoint an accredited legal representative who can be held accountable for violations. This requirement is intended to strengthen oversight in the digital space.

Badawy described the decision as an effort to protect society while supporting technological progress. He stressed that while the government does not oppose digital innovation, it is crucial that these advancements do not negatively impact society.

While the policy aligns with Egypt’s broader efforts to create a safer online environment, it is expected to affect many Egyptians who rely on these apps for sports betting or other wagering activities. Offshore operators are also likely to see a decline in revenue as they lose access to Egypt’s market of more than 100 million people.
