Botswana.- The Botswana Gambling Authority<\/strong> is considering lowering the country’s legal gambling age from 21 to 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the regulator, the move will align Botswana’s regulations with international standards and address the increasing participation of young adults in gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal emerges amid broader reforms in Botswana’s gambling sector. The Gambling Authority is updating its policies to reflect the evolving landscape of gaming and betting, particularly with the rise of online platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While speaking at the launch of Bet267<\/a>, Gambling Authority CEO Peter Emolemo Kesitilwe<\/strong> noted that the move would also improve consumer protection and promote legal gambling, resulting in higher revenue for the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, concerns about underage gambling persist. According to a 2020 baseline study<\/strong>, Botswana faces a 5 per cent<\/strong> prevalence of problem gambling, exacerbated by minors’ involvement in online gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To combat this issue, the Gambling Authority has launched responsible gaming initiatives such as the “Dices and Dreams”<\/strong> program, which educates students on resisting gambling temptations. It also recently unveiled the “Motshameko o Phepa” campaign<\/strong>, which promotes responsible gambling across more than 100 villages.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed age reduction has sparked debate nationwide. Advocates argue it reflects the maturity of 18-year-olds and would reduce illegal gambling. However, critics worry the proposal may increase vulnerability to gambling-related harms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gambling Authority believes that any policy changes will be accompanied by strengthened safeguards, including enhanced education, stricter ID verification and accessible support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This development underscores the ongoing debate about balancing economic benefits with social responsibility in Botswana.<\/p>\n\n\n
