Driving this growth is the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), widely praised for keeping the sector responsibly regulated and boosting investor confidence.

George Partridge, Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism and newly appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, hailed the sector’s growth and potential. Speaking at a strategic engagement with MAGLA on January 24, he said MAGLA balances “revenue, tourism and social responsibility”, noting that properly regulated gambling supports Malawi’s economic growth.

Partridge said, according to Malawi24: “Gambling is an experience for both local and foreign consumers. It complements our tourism products and attracts more consumers, and when they spend more, the government also benefits through increased revenue.”

Partridge commended MAGLA for promoting the responsible growth of the gambling industry and strengthening investor confidence. He added: “A thriving gambling sector, when properly regulated, can be a major contributor to Malawi’s economic growth.”

Government backs MAGLA’s mission

Partridge also acknowledged the challenges MAGLA faces in managing a growing industry but emphasised that the government is committed to supporting the authority’s mission.

MAGLA Director General Rachel Mijiga described this as a strong show of government support for the gaming industry. “We are grateful to the Minister for visiting MAGLA and for the guidance he has provided on how we can take the industry forward, particularly on responsible gambling and sustainable growth,” said Mijiga.

Meanwhile, Partridge also commended MAGLA’s role in protecting young people: “As a regulator of gambling, one of the major challenges is the negative effects of gambling on society and on children. We wanted to understand what MAGLA is doing to minimise these negative effects, and this is an area they are taking seriously,” he said.

The government’s recognition of MAGLA has been seen as a clear signal to investors that the country is serious about creating a safe, transparent and profitable gambling environment.
