{"id":1648,"date":"2025-04-28T02:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-28T05:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=1648"},"modified":"2026-04-19T17:31:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:31:06","slug":"nff-threatens-10-year-ban-for-match-fixing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/nff-threatens-10-year-ban-for-match-fixing","title":{"rendered":"NFF threatens 10-year ban for match fixing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Offending referees could also face further legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria.- The <strong>Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)<\/strong> has warned referees officiating matches in Nigeria\u2019s professional leagues to maintain the integrity of the sport or face a lengthy ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a circular released on <strong>April 23, 2025<\/strong>, the NFF warned referees that match-fixing would attract <strong>a minimum ban of 10 years<\/strong> and potential legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NFF defined match-fixing as \u201can attempt to determine\/manipulate the outcome of matches outside the Laws of the game.\u201d In the memo, it cautioned referees to remain impartial and resist any attempts by club officials and agents to manipulate match results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement signed by NFF secretary <strong>Mohammed Ameenu<\/strong> read: \u201cIt is obvious that all the three Leagues (NPFL, NNL and NWFL) are at critical stage while the NLO will kick-start today, <strong>Wednesday, April 23, 2025<\/strong>. We are conscious that teams and their agents within and outside the refereeing as well as the football circles will mount pressure on you in order to court favours for their teams and pay masters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the ban, the football body warned that it would involve state security services in investigating and prosecuting offenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federation also revealed that its president and general secretary have established a high-level <strong>independent monitoring committee<\/strong> to supervise match venues and report suspicious activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NFF\u2019s warning comes days after the NPFL announced a probe into <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/npfl-investigates-match-fixing-allegation-in-local-league\">match-fixing allegations involving Lobi Stars<\/a> football club. The issue came to light when the team\u2019s media officer, <strong>Emmanuel Ujah<\/strong>, alleged that club members were fixing matches and betting on the outcomes with local companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent times, there have been growing concerns over the integrity of Nigeria\u2019s professional football leagues, especially the NPFL.
