Commuters travelling on public transport, such as kombis between Manzini and Mbabane, are often seen placing bets during their journeys, while others gamble as they wait in bank queues. Popular games include crash-style options such as Aviator, now common across southern Africa.

Clinical psychologist Ndoniyamanzi Mdlalose warned about the hidden nature of the problem. She said: “January blues have driven many people into gambling, which has sadly resulted in a range of psychological disorders such as major depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, suicidal ideation, domestic violence and emotional trauma to family members, especially dependants.”

While participation is legal, she stressed personal responsibility, noting: “There is no crime in participating in gambling; however, it is critical to have self-control, emotional intelligence and a sense of satisfaction and appreciation. Winners know when to stop.”

The government of Eswatini has responded to these concerns with proposals, some of which include requiring national identity cards for registration to prevent underage access and monitor activity. Parliament passed a motion in 2025 to regulate online operators more closely, addressing gaps in existing laws. The ministry is planning measures such as blocking minors from mobile wallets used for betting, which are expected to be introduced in early 2026.

   See also:

See also: Eswatini reports gambling revenue of E26.1m in 2025

Many turn to online gambling apps on their phones in the hope of making quick gains to ease short-term financial pressure.

Eswatini has observed a significant surge in online gambling activity, particularly in January, attributed to heightened household financial pressures.
