Uganda.- Online casino and sports betting platforms went offline in Uganda following a nationwide suspension of public internet access and certain mobile services during the election period. The internet shutdown, enforced by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC)<\/strong>, prevented most users from accessing betting websites and mobile gambling apps during the restricted hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The directive took effect on January 13, 2026 at 18:00 local time<\/strong> and applied to all licensed telecom operators and internet service providers in Uganda. Authorities said the measure was introduced on national security grounds to limit misinformation and prevent interference during the elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the order, telecom operators were instructed to block public internet access, suspend the sale and registration of new SIM cards and halt outbound data roaming to One Network Area<\/strong> countries. They were also required to disable mobile VPN services to prevent users from bypassing the restrictions. The restrictions cover mobile internet services, fibre broadband, fixed wireless connections, leased lines and satellite internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UCC stated that only essential national systems using non-mobile internet connections are exempt, and these exemptions do not cover public services such as online casinos and sports betting platforms. The regulator warned that failure to comply with the directive could result in severe penalties, including fines and possible suspension of operating licences.<\/p>\n\n\n
