Malawi.- The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has teamed up with Mibawa Studios to launch a quiz competition for secondary and private schools across the country. The programme, which began this month, aims to strengthen students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills while building their confidence.

Dumbo Muwalo, MAGLA’s Director of Finance and Administration, explained the reasoning behind the initiative during the launch event. He noted that MAGLA saw a need for greater educational support in schools to help students gain knowledge and self-assurance.

He said: “We are proud to support this programme. It is an investment in our students and in Malawi’s future. Through this, our children can become capable citizens who help develop the nation and support the Malawi 2063 goals.”

The competition will run for six months, starting in February, and will involve students from various schools. Participants will take turns asking questions, with Mibawa Studios handling coordination. Beyond the quizzes, the programme includes opportunities for students to showcase talents in areas such as poetry, drama and music. These segments will appear on Mibawa’s television channel, giving young people a platform to share their work and develop their skills.

John Nthakomwa, Executive Director of Mibawa Studios, highlighted how the partnership aligns with the company’s focus on education and entertainment. He stated: “We have wanted to run programmes on education and talent for some time, but funding was an issue. MAGLA’s support provides the resources we need to make this happen and deliver quality results.”

MAGLA has committed 92 million Malawian kwacha (€45,000) to fund the initiative. As a gaming regulatory body, the authority used the launch to remind students and families about the risks of gambling. Muwalo stressed that gambling is only for adults over 18 and not for those under parental care. He called on parents and wards to monitor their children closely and guide them towards their schoolwork instead.
