{"id":1541,"date":"2025-04-24T10:44:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T13:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=1541"},"modified":"2026-04-19T17:33:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:33:37","slug":"70-of-ugandan-youth-engage-in-gambling-study-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/70-of-ugandan-youth-engage-in-gambling-study-reveals","title":{"rendered":"70% of Ugandan youth engage in gambling, study reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The survey collected data from 150 respondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda.- A team of students from <strong>Kampala International School Uganda<\/strong> has published findings from their research on Ugandans&#8217; access to gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, conducted as part of the students&#8217; <strong>IGCSE Global Perspectives Team Project<\/strong>, sheds light on Ugandan youth&#8217;s gambling habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report, <strong>70.3 per cent<\/strong> of the 150 respondents surveyed admitted to engaging in different types of gambling, such as sports betting, online casinos, lotteries and scratch cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research also highlights a concerning trend of chasing losses, which can fuel addiction. <strong>40.3 per cen<\/strong>t of respondents reported betting further after losses to recoup their money, while\u00a0<strong>20.7 per cent<\/strong> chose to stop betting after losing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On average, respondents lost <strong>UGX 115,332<\/strong> (\u20ac27.66) betting, roughly three times their expected average winnings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students reported that the survey was completely anonymous to protect participant identities. Based on its results, the students plan to collaborate with the <strong>National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board<\/strong> (NLGRB) to embark on an awareness campaign that sheds light on the perils of underage gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development comes weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/nlgrb-partners-with-makerere-university-to-combat-student-problem-gambling\">the NLGRB signed an MOU<\/a> with Makerere University&#8217;s student leadership to promote responsible gaming practices.
