South Africa.- The Eastern Cape Gambling Board<\/strong> has announced the launch of Inkwenkwezi<\/strong> Bets<\/strong>, a new online betting platform in its jurisdiction. The site provides a range of betting services, including sports betting and casino games like slots and table games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch marks an expansion of gaming options for residents and visitors in the Eastern Cape<\/strong> province, and aligns with the ECGB’s mission to promote a socially responsible gaming industry through effective regulation and licensing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it comes at a crucial time in South Africa when there is ongoing debate about the legality of online casino gambling in the jurisdiction. Currently, online sports betting is legal when conducted through licensed operators, but online casinos are prohibited unless they operate under specific provincial exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2025<\/strong>, the Supreme Court of Appeal<\/strong> ruled that bookmakers cannot offer online roulette and other casino games, deeming such operations unlawful under the Gauteng<\/strong> Gambling Act<\/strong>. While the National Gambling Board (NGB)<\/strong> interpreted the decision<\/a> as a national ban, it was met with resistance from bookmakers, legal experts<\/a> and the South African Bookmakers Association (SABA)<\/strong>, who argued that the ruling only applies to Gauteng-licensed bookmakers and doesn’t ban online betting nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the ruling, no bookmaker has stopped offering online casino games, and provinces like the Western Cape and Mpumalanga<\/strong> have distanced themselves from the judgement, stating it doesn’t apply to their licensed operators.<\/p>\n\n\n
