Nigeria.- Nigeria\u2019s horse racing season<\/strong> in 2025 highlighted traditional equestrian sport while showcasing opportunities for regulated betting<\/strong> across the region. The Kaduna and Bida derbies<\/strong>, part of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria (HRFN) calendar, were among the highlights of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Sports Commission<\/strong> (NSC) promoted the \u201csports weekend economy\u201d model, encouraging weekend sporting events, including horse racing, to boost economic activity<\/strong> and create sports-related jobs. Analysts noted that horse racing events naturally generated interest in betting, attracting fans <\/strong>and licensed sportsbooks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko<\/strong> said: \u201cWe don\u2019t want idle venues on weekends. When people plan their weekends, we want them to include at least one sporting event nearby. The uniqueness<\/strong> of horse racing makes it very viable for the sports weekend economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cOn the two occasions I attended the Sahel races<\/strong> in Bida and Kaduna. I was looking at the economic impact, from those selling at the venues to the thousands<\/strong> in attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaduna Derby drives betting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kaduna International Horse Racing Derby carried the theme \u201cHope Renewed Sahel Savannah Series\u201d, highlighting a regional approach to equestrian sport. Licensed betting operators provided regulated wagering options <\/strong>for stakes races, sprints and handicaps during the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the centre of the racing calendar was President Bola Tinubu\u2019s horse, Renewed Hope<\/strong>, which achieved top finishes in previous derbies, including the 2024 Bida Horse Racing Tournament and the 2025 Yola International Derby. Observers said its participation in key races increased engagement<\/strong> among bettors, both locally and from neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad and Cameroon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HRFN officials stressed that the expansion <\/strong>of weekend racing events aimed to professionalise horse racing in Nigeria. Although the NSC focuses on sports development, betting remains an integral part <\/strong>of the horse racing ecosystem, providing legal opportunities under licensed frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n
