The board is providing resources to upgrade<strong> infrastructure<\/strong> and visitor facilities at the site, which has long been in need of attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shrine, located in Chimoio, Mozambique, is a sacred <strong>memorial site<\/strong> where about <strong>1,200<\/strong> liberation fighters were killed during a <strong>Rhodesian attack<\/strong> in 1977. It has served as a central remembrance site for Zimbabwe\u2019s liberation struggle and continues to attract growing numbers of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister <strong>Kazembe Kazembe<\/strong> directed the LGB to fund urgently needed <strong>renovations<\/strong> after inspecting the monument and noting its deteriorating infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kazembe highlighted challenges such as limited access to potable water, inadequate caretaker facilities, and outdated <strong>visitor amenities<\/strong>. \u201cThere is a lot that needs to be done, which is why we appealed to the Lotteries and Gaming Board to assist the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe with <strong>resources <\/strong>to upgrade these<strong> facilities<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaming Board-backed monument nears completion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/ZIM-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12808\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Lotteries and Gaming Board, channelling gambling sector revenues to support national projects and heritage preservation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board&#8217;s Vice Chair <strong>Costain Sabau<\/strong> confirmed its <strong>commitment<\/strong> to supporting the initiative. Renovation works include fencing the entire area, constructing new visitor toilets, building a shaded rest shelter and installing a solar-powered system for the borehole. Two three-bedroom caretaker houses are also under <strong>construction<\/strong> to improve staff accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restoration works are now more than <strong>95 per cent complete<\/strong>, with final touches expected soon. Visitor numbers have also increased significantly, with the shrine reportedly attracting around <strong>2,000 visitors<\/strong> per week, including students, researchers and political delegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upgrades aim to transform the Chimoio Liberation War Monument into a world-class political heritage<strong> tourism destination<\/strong>, ensuring proper preservation of the site and a better experience for visitors.
