The tax took effect just days ago on November\u202f1 for physical retail outlets and is expected to roll out around <strong>mid\u2011November<\/strong> for <strong>digital platforms<\/strong>, under <strong>Law No.\u202f17\/2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <strong>official notice<\/strong> to players, LONASE stated: &#8220;The Senegalese National Lottery (LONASE) informs its valued<strong> customers<\/strong> that, in accordance with Law No.\u202f17\/2025, a 20 per cent tax will now be applied to winnings from games sold on the <strong>physical sales network<\/strong>, starting Saturday, November\u202f1,\u202f2025, and on the digital channel, starting in mid\u2011November\u202f2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/LONASE-NOTICE-NEW-454x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/LONASE-NOTICE-NEW-454x600.jpg 454w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/LONASE-NOTICE-NEW.jpg 1456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">LONASE official Notice confirms 20 per cent tax deducted automatically on all winnings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Civic contribution vs player penalty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax is <strong>automatically deducted<\/strong> at all points of sale and on<strong> digital platforms<\/strong>, so bettors do not need to take any extra steps. A Senenews report stated: \u201cThis 20 per cent tax will be levied on the total amount won, after the bet has been validated. For example, a player who wins <strong>CFA100,000 (\u20ac152<\/strong>) from a winning bet will only receive<strong> CFA80,000 (\u20ac122)<\/strong>, the remaining<strong> CFA20,000 (\u20ac30)<\/strong> being paid to the Treasury as a tax on winnings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bettors are bracing for a new government measure intended to support countrywide development, the report added. \u201cPresented as a \u2018civic contribution to national development\u2019, this decision, initiated by the government, is already provoking <strong>strong reactions<\/strong> among <strong>bettors<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 20 per cent tax on player winnings is also part of a broader draft measure under draft law No.\u202f17\/2025, included in Prime Minister <strong>Ousmane Sonko\u2019s economic and social recovery plan (PRES)<\/strong>. The draft law also proposes that operators contribute 20 per cent of their share of prize pools to the state, though this measure remains under <strong>legislative consideration<\/strong>.
