Mobile gaming, esports and digital adoption drive rapid growth as PwC reports strong revenue and projected CAGR through 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

South Africa.- Africa\u2019s gaming industry<\/strong> is surging, with South Africa, Nigeria<\/strong> and Kenya<\/strong> generating more than $600m<\/strong> in 2024, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers\u2019<\/strong> (PwC) Africa Entertainment and Media Outlook 2025-2029 report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PwC, a global professional services<\/strong> firm providing audit, consulting and advisory insights across industries, reported that gaming and esports<\/strong> are driving much of Africa\u2019s entertainment revenue<\/strong> growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PWC said, according to Broadcast Media Africa: \u201cSouth Africa generated $296m<\/strong> in gaming revenue in 2024, with a projected CAGR of <\/strong>4.6 per cent through 2029<\/strong>. Nigeria earned $176m<\/strong>, boasting the highest growth rate<\/strong> among the three at <\/strong>7.4 per cent CAGR, while Kenya contributed $153m<\/strong>, growing at 6.9 per cent.\u201d This highlights the rapid expansion of mobile gaming<\/strong> and esports across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report adds that this surge is fuelled by \u201crising smartphone adoption, improved internet connectivity<\/strong> and digital payment solutions\u201d, making mobile and online games more accessible. Esports tournaments are flourishing in South Africa, Nigeria\u2019s mobile gaming sector is attracting significant global investment and Kenya\u2019s influencer-driven, mobile-first gaming platforms are gaining strong traction<\/strong> among younger audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Africa\u2019s digital entertainment tops $1bn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While gaming drives the growth of Africa\u2019s digital entertainment sector, combined revenues<\/strong> across gaming, live music and OTT (over-the-top streaming) surpassed $1bn<\/strong> in 2024. PwC forecasts that by 2029, the three countries will collectively add nearly two million new OTT subscriptions, with South Africa expected to retain over 75 per cent of the regional market share, highlighting the broader digital ecosystem<\/strong> that is supporting both gaming and streaming audiences across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures highlight a continent in the midst of a digital entertainment revolution<\/strong>, where mobile innovation, esports and gaming culture are driving Africa\u2019s creative and tech economy forward.<\/p>\n\n\n
