COMESA launches a new regional platform across 21 African member states, set to simplify cross-border transactions and fuel growth in the continent\u2019s online betting industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Kenya.- The launch of COMESA\u2019s (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) Digital Retail Payments Platform<\/strong> is set to revolutionise online gambling across<\/strong> Africa. COMESA is a regional economic bloc of 21 African member states<\/strong> that aims to facilitate trade, financial integration and cross-border transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform\u2019s ability to handle cross-border payments<\/strong> in local currencies is set to benefit online betting operators<\/strong> and was officially launched on October 9, 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya<\/strong>, as one of COMESA\u2019s largest member states, has played a key role in the launch, with government officials highlighting the country\u2019s perspective on regional trade and financial integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya\u2019s Trade Minister, Lee Kinyanjui<\/strong>, said the platform is a \u201cgame-changer\u201d. For the first time, cross-border trade within COMESA can be settled directly in local currencies,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For gambling operators<\/strong>, this means faster deposits, instant withdrawals and fewer fees, making it easier to attract and retain players across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President William Ruto <\/strong>also emphasised Kenya\u2019s commitment to regional financial integration, adding: \u201cOne of the most viable pathways for Africa, and for regional economic blocs like COMESA, is to strengthen our home-grown multilateral financial institutions<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For online gambling, this could encourage harmonised regulations across COMESA member states, providing safer and more transparent experiences<\/strong> for players and operators alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial inclusion is another major plus. As more Africans gain access to digital financial services, a wider audience is set to benefit from mobile betting, casino games<\/strong> and lottery platforms. Operators adopting COMESA\u2019s system could see dramatic growth in users and transaction volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
