Uganda regulator CEO recognised for responsible gaming leadership

Ngabirano has led the NLGRB since September 2023.

Uganda.- Denis Mudene Ngabirano, chief executive officer of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), has received the “Rising Star in Responsible Gaming” award at the inaugural iGaming Afrika Summit Awards. The recognition highlights ongoing regulatory efforts in Uganda to strengthen oversight of the gambling sector.

The award was presented during the iGaming Afrika Summit, which convenes regulators, operators and stakeholders to discuss gaming trends, compliance and consumer protection across Africa. The event began in Nairobi, Kenya on May 4 and concluded on May 6.

In a social media post announcing the award, the Board described it as a “tangible testament to the commitment of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board to create a safe, fair and well-regulated gaming environment in Uganda.”

Ngabirano has led the NLGRB since September 2023. Under his leadership, the regulator has strengthened compliance oversight and intensified efforts to promote responsible gaming practices across the sector.

The recognition comes at a time when Uganda’s gaming industry continues to grow, driven by increased mobile penetration and digital payment systems. This expansion has raised regulatory concerns, particularly around underage gambling, advertising standards and the need for stronger consumer safeguards. Authorities have responded by stepping up monitoring of operators, with an emphasis on adherence to licensing conditions and responsible gaming standards.
