Soweto Derby fever: Punters win big in Betway ‘Kick for a Million’ challenge

Five lucky fans cash in during halftime spectacle at sold-out FNB Stadium, turning football dreams into financial reality.

South Africa.- The atmosphere at FNB Stadium was electric as more than 90,000 fans packed into South Africa’s biggest sporting cathedral for the second edition of the Betway Premiership Soweto Derby.

While the clash between football giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates ignited the pitch, it was the halftime showstopper that truly set the stands ablaze – the return of the Betway ‘Kick for a Million’ challenge.

In a moment that fused raw passion with pure possibility, five fans – Sibongile Magasela, Sithembele Ndlela, Thabo Makoka, Siphokazi Batyashe and Obakeng Moroke – stunned the crowd by each landing a winning kick, collectively pocketing R750,000 ($40,000).

Active Betway accounts entered into draw

From the stands to the spotlight, these lucky punters were selected via an exhilarating pre-match activation. Fans with active Betway accounts entered a draw outside the stadium, with the fortunate few earning the chance to step onto the pitch for a once-in-a-lifetime shot at glory, and a significant payout.

Under the floodlights and fuelled by adrenaline, each contestant aimed at a series of marked prize zones with high stakes. With cool heads and steady feet, the five rose to the occasion, turning a halftime gimmick into a life-changing moment.

“No words can describe how I’m feeling right now. It’s my first time winning anything, and I still can’t believe it,” an emotional Sibongile Magasela told Blazon Magazine.

“This is a life-changing win. I will use the money wisely to settle my debts and take a well-deserved vacation. This is truly the highlight of my year.”

This marks the second instalment of the fan-favourite challenge, following February’s edition where five others shared R700,000 ($37,000). As the inaugural Betway Premiership season nears its finale, the brand’s impact continues to ripple beyond the pitch.

“The Soweto Derby is a celebration of football passion, and we’re proud to be part of it in such a meaningful way,” said Mark Rowles, Head of Marketing at Betway South Africa.

“The Betway Kick for a Million is more than a competition – it’s about giving fans an extraordinary life-changing opportunity.”

With next season already on the horizon, Betway is set to raise the stakes even higher – proving once again that in football, anything is possible.
