South Africa’s Boxing Rivalry Set for a Knockout Showdown

The gloves are off in a battle for South Africa’s boxing crown in May and June 2025.

Johannesburg, South Africa: The gloves are off in a battle for South Africa’s boxing crown. For many years, the provinces of Gauteng and the Eastern Cape have been locked in a heated war of words over which province reigns supreme as the Boxing Mecca. Now, thanks to an explosive new initiative, that debate will finally be settled – inside the ring.

Ace Ngcobo, the general manager of the Soccer Premier League and chair of the National Boxing Championship, has thrown down the gauntlet with a bold plan. It will be a high-stakes showdown that will see the best fighters from both provinces go toe-to-toe in a series of must-watch bouts. The announcement follows a thrilling seven-fight event at Arena Holdings in Parktown, Johannesburg, which put some of the country’s finest boxing talents on display.

Promoter Anney Xala helped orchestrate the high-energy development event, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable battle for boxing supremacy. But Ngcobo made it clear that the time for talk is over and that it was time for the fighters to decide.

His vision involves a groundbreaking two-leg tournament that will pit Gauteng’s best against the Eastern Cape’s finest, finally settling the score once and for all. The first leg is locked in for the last Friday of May, with the second leg set for the final Friday of June. Hosting duties will alternate between the two provinces. The event is set to draw media attention from across Africa.

The Road to Glory

There will be five electrifying weight divisions: mini flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, junior lightweight and lightweight.

Ngcobo is also pushing for a game-changing 50-round tournament, which is six rounds more than the traditional limit. If it is approved by Boxing SA, this will be a landmark moment toward cementing South Africa’s boxing as a must-watch spectacle on the global stage. Thereafter, the winning province will get to hoist the coveted Boxing Mecca belt, a title that will need to be defended annually.

And soon, we’ll finally have an answer to the burning question – who truly deserves the title of South Africa’s boxing capital? Gauteng or the Eastern Cape? The ring will decide.
