NWGB joins criminal justice training focused on illegal gambling and cybercrime

The NWGB called for closer coordination with SAPS and the NPA in identifying illegal gambling activities and taking cases through the prosecution process.

South Africa.- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for a training and knowledge-sharing session focused on strengthening cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of criminal activities.

The session brought together stakeholders from the criminal justice system to discuss investigative and legal issues relevant to cases involving organised and technology-enabled crime. Discussions covered the 48-hour rule, the non-enrolment of matters, the investigation and seizure of evidence in cybercrime cases, and the use of racketeering provisions to address organised criminal activity.

A presentation by NWGB representative Simon Mogapi focused on gambling-related crimes and the impact of illegal gambling in the North West province.

Mogapi described illegal gambling as a serious criminal activity, noting that unlicensed gambling operations can create opportunities for money laundering and organised crime while exposing the public to financial losses and other social harms.

He also highlighted the lack of consumer safeguards associated with illegal gambling. People using unlicensed gambling operations do not receive the protections that apply to activities conducted by licensed operators under the regulatory framework.

Mogapi referenced previous joint operations and engagements with law enforcement and prosecutorial bodies as part of the NWGB’s ongoing response to illegal gambling in the province. However, he called for closer cooperation among the three institutions to identify illegal gambling activities, investigate those involved and support prosecutions that can disrupt criminal operations.

The NWGB reiterated its commitment to working with law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities, stating that a coordinated approach is necessary to effectively address illegal gambling and promote compliance with the province’s gambling regulatory framework.
