NWGB holds responsible gambling outreach in Sannieshof
Discussions covered responsible gambling practices, enforcement efforts and available support services.
South Africa.- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB), in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), has held a responsible gambling outreach at Sannieshof Lodge and Events on Thursday, March 26.
The event, held under the theme “Play Smart. Stay Legal. Together We Gamble Responsibly.” addresses concerns around gambling addiction and illegal gambling in communities.
MEC Bitsa Lenkopane delivered the keynote address. She emphasised that while gambling serves as a driver for public revenue, job creation and economic development, these benefits must not come at the expense of individuals’ wellbeing. She condemned illegal gambling operations, especially those that expose minors to machines in local spaza shops, and called for strict compliance with licensing rules.
Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge stressed that gambling should be viewed strictly as a form of entertainment and not a means of making money.
Discussions covered responsible gambling practices, enforcement efforts and available support services. Community members were encouraged to avoid informal and unlicensed gambling activities, including fafi, dice, card games and coin spinning, and to go for only authorised options.
The outreach brought together key stakeholders, including the African Lotteries and Gaming Association (ALGA), the National Gambling Board, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, the South African Police Service and licensed industry operators.
