NWGB and DEDECT celebrate Nelson Mandela Day in Bodibe Village

South Africa.- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has joined forces with the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day in Bodibe Village. The event, which took place at Kamohau Home Care, was led by MEC Bitsa Lenkopane, alongside NWGB Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge

Although Nelson Mandela Day is usually observed in July, the organisers intentionally held the commemoration in September to emphasise that “every day is a Mandela Day”. The decision was meant to remind communities that service to others should not be limited to a single day in the year.

As part of the programme, donations were made to Kamohau Home Care, Onalerona Club for the Aged and Iphuteng Centre. Items such as beds, blankets, gardening tools and equipment were handed over to improve daily living conditions and to support the elderly, caregivers and other vulnerable groups within the community.

MEC Lenkopane urged residents to see Mandela Day as more than an annual occasion. She said: “Mandela Day is a principle to live by daily”, reinforcing the idea of continuous acts of kindness. She also announced the Matlakala ke zaka waste management programme, designed to empower young people with sustainable opportunities in environmental care and economic participation.

The event drew participation from traditional and municipal leadership, with representatives from Kgosi Rapulana’s office and the Ditsobotla mayor’s office, both of whom acknowledged the impact of the contributions. They expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort, highlighting how such initiatives strengthen unity, improve service delivery and promote community development.

Through the donations and new youth initiatives, the NWGB and DEDECT underscore their commitment to keeping Mandela’s legacy alive, not only in words but in practical actions that uplift lives in the North West.
