North West Gambling Board marks Youth Month with responsible gambling awareness drive
The NWGB highlighted the risks associated with irresponsible gambling.
South Africa.- The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) has commemorated Youth Month by educating students on responsible gambling, alcohol consumption and consumer rights during an awareness programme held at Orbit TVET College in Brits, North West Province.
The initiative was conducted in partnership with entities of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), as well as the Liquor Regulator and Consumer Affairs.
Held in the Madibeng Local Municipality, the campaign aimed to equip young people with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their education, finances and future prospects.
During the programme, the NWGB highlighted the risks associated with irresponsible gambling, including financial hardship, addiction and poor academic performance. Students were encouraged to prioritise their studies and long-term goals when making financial decisions.
The regulator also reminded students receiving financial assistance, including beneficiaries of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), to use their funding responsibly and invest in their education rather than engaging in activities that could jeopardise their future opportunities.
The NWGB further informed students about free treatment and counselling services available through the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation for individuals experiencing gambling-related harm.
The Liquor Regulator used the event to raise awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and alcohol abuse, while Consumer Affairs officials educated students on consumer rights, responsible spending habits and ways to protect themselves from scams and unfair business practices.
The awareness campaign formed part of broader Youth Month activities aimed at empowering young South Africans with knowledge and life skills while promoting responsible behaviour in gambling, alcohol consumption and personal finance.
