Uganda’s NLGRB holds media roundtable on enforcement and responsible gaming

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board used a media roundtable in Bugolobi to outline enforcement priorities and responsible gaming efforts as Uganda weighs changes to its gaming law.

Uganda.- The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) held a media roundtable on Tuesday, May 26, at its offices in Bugolobi, bringing together journalists and senior officials to review Uganda’s gaming sector and ongoing regulatory efforts.

The engagement focused on regulation, responsible gaming initiatives, and the performance of the industry as authorities respond to rapid growth in digital and online betting platforms across the country.

During the roundtable, NLGRB officials reiterated their focus on compliance among licensed operators, action against illegal gambling and steps to curb underage participation. The board also highlighted its responsible gaming campaigns and its work with law enforcement and other state agencies on enforcement and consumer protection.

Discussions further covered the sector’s contribution to the economy through tax revenue, licensing fees, employment creation, and the wider digital payments ecosystem, with officials noting that increased internet access and mobile penetration have accelerated participation in online gaming.

The regulator used the forum to explain its collaboration with law enforcement and other government agencies in tracking unlicensed operators, preventing revenue leakages, and improving consumer protection. Attention was also given to how emerging technologies are reshaping betting products, customer engagement, and payment systems.

The Board also engaged directly with journalists on policy implementation, enforcement priorities, and planned reforms as the industry becomes more digitised.

The NLGRB described the roundtable as a key platform for building public trust and strengthening dialogue with the media. It said the session provided an opportunity to share insights on regulation, responsible gaming, and the future direction of Uganda’s gaming sector.

A post-event statement from the regulator noted that the discussion reinforced its commitment to ensuring a safe and fair gaming environment, while balancing industry growth with stronger compliance and consumer protection measures.
