NLGRB arrests Chinese national over illegal gambling shops in Nebbi
The enforcement action covered gaming outlets in Pakwale, Lajji, Kei and Jupalanga villages near the Zombo border.
Uganda.- Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has arrested a Chinese national following an enforcement operation that identified several unlicensed gaming shops in Nebbi District.
The operation followed a tip-off that led officers to gaming outlets in Pakwale, Lajji, Kei and Jupalanga villages in Nebbi District, near the Zombo border. According to the NLGRB, several gaming machines were seized during the raid and taken as exhibits to support the prosecution.
The regulator said the gaming shops were operating without the required licences and in areas where gaming activities are prohibited, thereby breaching Uganda’s Lotteries and Gaming Act, Cap. 334, which governs the licensing and operation of gaming businesses in the country.
The operator of the unlicensed gambling shops, identified as Lin Xiaolin, is expected to appear before the Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court in Makindye to face charges related to the alleged violations.
The Nebbi operation forms part of the regulator’s wider efforts under its Operation Mashine Haramu campaign to identify and shut down illegal gaming businesses and remove unauthorised gaming machines from circulation. It comes shortly after another intelligence-led enforcement drive in Uganda’s eastern region resulted in the closure of four illegal gaming shops in Kibuku.
