NLC marks Mandela Day with community outreach across South Africa
Mandela Day encourages people and organisations to allocate 67 minutes to community service in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has marked Mandela Day with community outreach initiatives across South Africa, as staff from its head office and provincial offices supported vulnerable groups through donations and volunteer work.
Held under the theme “It is in your hands to make a difference”, the campaign saw employees dedicate 67 minutes to community service in line with the annual Mandela Day tradition.
Observed annually on July 18, Mandela Day encourages individuals and organisations to allocate 67 minutes to community service in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
In the Free State, the NLC visited Thuso Day Care Centre for Children with Disabilities in Allanridge, donating food parcels and spending time with the children through recreational activities designed to promote inclusion and social interaction.
The North West provincial office carried out its programme at Bellevue Itshidilleng Bagodi Organisation in Lombaardslaagte, where staff shared food parcels and assisted with gardening and cleaning to improve the facility.
In the Eastern Cape, the NLC donated a tumble dryer, adult nappies and stress balls to residents of Ethembeni Old Age Home in NU2, Mdantsane.
The KwaZulu-Natal office supported Sibusisowe Child Welfare in Claremont by cleaning the facility, donating food parcels and helping establish a vegetable garden at its early childhood development centre to promote food security and sustainability.
In the Northern Cape, the provincial office visited the Northern Cape Council for the Blind in Kimberley, where staff prepared lunch and distributed fruit parcels. The initiative was supported by Sol Plaatje Universityy and the South African Army, whose volunteers helped paint and improve the facility.
The commission said similar activities were held at its head office and other provincial offices as employees participated in community service projects to commemorate the event.
