NLA to increase MoMo instant winnings payout

The upgrade is tied to ongoing reforms to modernise lottery operations and make participation more convenient.

Ghana.- The National Lottery Authority is set to significantly increase its mobile money (MoMo) instant winnings payout threshold, in a move aimed at attracting more players and improving user experience.

Director general Mohammed Abdul-Salam said the current instant payout limit of about GHS1,200 (€90) will be raised to as high as GHS30,000 (€2,261) under a new digital payment framework being rolled out.

He explained that the upgrade is tied to ongoing reforms to modernise lottery operations and make participation more convenient, particularly through mobile and electronic channels. He said: “People want speed and convenience. If you win, you should be able to receive your money instantly without unnecessary delays.”

The initiative forms part of a broader push to deepen digital engagement, as the NLA expands its USSD and online lottery platforms. Players can already stake via mobile phones without visiting physical kiosks, a shift the authority believes will drive wider participation.

Abdul-Salam noted that enhancing instant payouts would serve as a major incentive for customers to use official digital channels rather than informal or unregulated outlets.

He also linked the reform to efforts to improve transparency and monitoring within the lottery ecosystem. By routing transactions through electronic systems, the NLA can track activity in real time and reduce leakages.

The DG emphasised that trust remains central to lottery operations, and faster payouts would reinforce public confidence in the system.

The planned increase is expected to complement other reforms, including improved payment systems and stricter enforcement against illegal operators who undermine the formal market.
