Nigerian football legend named first-ever Grand Sports Ambassador

Football icon Dr Olusegun Odegbami steps into a bold new role to spearhead Ogun State’s sports and economic transformation.

Nigeria.- In a move that’s set to redefine the intersection of sports, governance and economic development in Nigeria, Governor Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun has appointed football legend Dr Olusegun Odegbami as the nation’s first-ever Grand Sports Ambassador (GSA).

The historic announcement, delivered at the Ogun State Government House, came during a tightly held closed-door session that surprised even the man of the hour.

The appointment signals more than a ceremonial honour – it’s a high-stakes mission. Odegbami revealed that his new role comes with a “simple but challenging mandate” to oversee the evolution of a sports ecosystem in Ogun State.

At its heart lies the Gateway Games 2025, envisioned as the largest multi-sport event in Africa, outside the All-African Games. The Gateway Games takes place from May 16 to 30. This prestigious event, long regarded as Nigeria’s own Olympics, will bring together athletes, coaches, officials, sports betting houses, fans and dignitaries from across the federation for a grand celebration of sportsmanship, culture and national unity.

Matches and night economy

But it’s not just about medals and matches. Odegbami will also spearhead the development of a Night Economy tied to the games, a bold strategy aimed at unlocking tourism, entertainment and economic activity well beyond the final whistle.

“I thank His Excellency, Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, for this honour. I accept the responsibility with all humility and gratitude,” said Odegbami in his acceptance speech.

The Governor was equally emphatic about the appointment’s significance: “With Odegbami at the helm of this project, I am confident that Ogun State will not only host the biggest Gateway Games ever but will set a new standard for sports development in Nigeria and Africa.”

As Ogun State positions itself as a hub for sports-driven transformation, the appointment of Odegbami is a bold leap into the future.
