Mali detains 10 Chinese nationals over illegal casino operation

Mali.- Ten Chinese nationals accused of operating an illegal casino in Bamako will remain in custody after Malian authorities rejected their request for provisional release.

The decision comes as investigators continue examining the gambling operation and the alleged involvement of local accomplices suspected of helping establish and run the venue.

The Chinese nationals were arrested after authorities uncovered a gambling establishment operating without legal authorisation in an upscale area of Bamako. Investigators are looking into how the casino was established and how it managed to operate for several months.

According to information reported by local media outlets, the operation allegedly involved local assistance from the planning stage. Investigators say premises were secured in a residential area and that young women were recruited before the gambling rooms began operating. The investigation also points to allegedly falsified administrative permits.

The venue reportedly attracted both Malian and foreign customers, with as many as 130 people attending on some evenings. Investigators also found that alcohol was served at the premises, while sex workers reportedly frequented the establishment.
