Malawi appoints new MAGLA Director General

The appointment comes as the regulator continues efforts to strengthen oversight of licensed operators.

Malawi.- Malawi has appointed Muchanankhwaye Mpuluka as the new Director General of the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), the country’s gaming, betting and lottery sector regulator.

The appointment, disclosed this week in a public statement, puts Mpuluka in charge of the Authority as Malawi’s gambling industry continues to grow amid tighter oversight and compliance frameworks.

Prior to his new role, Mpuluka held senior leadership and administrative roles within the Mulhako wa Alhomwe cultural organisation in Malawi. Public records show he previously served as the organisation’s Chief Executive officer for 13 years and later became Board Chairperson in 2023.

Earlier reports also identified him as an administrator for the organisation, where he handled operational and administrative matters linked to the group’s activities.

During his time at Mulhako wa Alhomwe, Mpuluka was involved in coordinating large-scale cultural events, public engagements and organisational administration. He also represented the organisation in media briefings and stakeholder engagements on cultural and community programmes.

His appointment to MAGLA comes as the regulator continues efforts to strengthen oversight of licensed operators and responsible gambling measures in the country’s betting and gaming sector. In recent years, the Authority has increased engagement with operators on compliance requirements and public awareness initiatives linked to gambling-related risks. It has also intensified enforcement operations against illegal gambling activities.

The regulator is expected to continue expanding its supervisory framework under Mpuluka’s leadership, with a focus on compliance enforcement, consumer protection and data-driven monitoring of gambling trends.
