Limpopo Gambling Board arrests five in Phalaborwa illegal gambling raid
The provincial regulator has also warned members of the public about the potential consequences of convictions for illegal gambling offences.
South Africa.- The Limpopo Gambling Board (LGB) has arrested five people and seized 80 computers and R3,210 (US$194) in cash during an operation targeting an illegal gambling establishment in Phalaborwa.
The LGB executed a search and seizure warrant at the Phalaborwa premises on September 22, with support from the South African Police Service (SAPS). One employee at the premises, identified as a cashier, was arrested and charged with operating an illegal gambling establishment.
Four people found gambling at the site were also arrested and charged with participating in illegal gambling activities. The four punters were each issued a R500 (US$30) summons and subsequently paid admission-of-guilt fines.
The employee’s case came before the court on September 23 and was subsequently postponed to October 21.
The LGB said it will continue taking enforcement action against unlicensed gambling operators and those participating in illegal gambling across Limpopo. The provincial regulator also warned members of the public about the potential consequences of convictions for illegal gambling offences, noting that a criminal record can affect future employment, business and other opportunities.
