Liberia’s lottery authority funds registration fees for 56 students
The programme is intended to reduce some of the financial barriers faced by students with disabilities in pursuing higher education.
Liberia.- The National Lottery Authority (NLA) of Liberia has donated L$152,000 (US$837) to help cover registration fees for 56 physically challenged students at the University of Liberia.
The assistance was presented on Tuesday, August 18 under the NLA’s Education Empowerment Program, which is administered through its Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Welfare departments. The programme is intended to reduce some of the financial barriers faced by students with disabilities in pursuing higher education.
The NLA said the initiative forms part of its wider social responsibility efforts to promote inclusive education and equal opportunities for vulnerable Liberians. The empowerment programme has operated for four years and provides support to physically challenged students attending public universities and community colleges across the country.
Presenting the cheque at the NLA’s Old Road headquarters in Monrovia, deputy director general for administration Ennish Lamie Fahnbulleh said the support reflects the Authority’s commitment to extending its social impact beyond its regulatory responsibilities.
Fahnbulleh also reaffirmed the Authority’s intention to strengthen its social intervention programmes and expand initiatives supporting education and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
The NLA said it would continue the Education Empowerment Program as part of its efforts to support students in Liberia’s public higher education institutions.
Gertrude Weah Doelu, administrative assistant at the University of Liberia’s Resource Center for Disabilities Support Services and Alternative Learning, received the cheque on behalf of the beneficiaries. She thanked the NLA for its continued support, saying the funding would help ease registration and transportation costs for the students.
