GrandWest Casino’s R600m mall expansion to tackle unemployment in SA
Major Mall expansion to create thousands of jobs and accelerate growth.
South Africa.- South Africa’s GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World is poised to deliver a powerful boost to the local economy with its ambitious R600m (€32m) retail mall development. Far more than an expansion, this project is set to become a major engine for job creation and economic progress, opening thousands of new opportunities across multiple sectors.
Based in Cape Town, a city known for its vibrant culture and rapid growth, the new 22,000 square metre mall will provide work not only during construction but also long-term jobs in retail, hospitality, events, security and operations.
Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager of GrandWest, said: “Since day one, we’ve been focused on working with our local communities to make a real difference. This mall will only ramp up that effort.”

Sun International owns and operates GrandWest Casino and holds a one-third stake in the new retail mall development, partnered with Flanagan & Gerard Property Group, which owns two-thirds.
Cape Town is dealing with challenges of youth unemployment and inequality, and developments like this mall are real, concrete opportunities for economic growth that include skills development and sustainable jobs for the local communities.
By opening up opportunities to Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and locals in the vicinity, the project is set to make an impact where it counts the most.
Vibrant hub of opportunity
Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with an anticipated opening in March 2027. With the new mall, GrandWest is transforming into a lively multi-purpose destination, combining retail, dining, hospitality and entertainment in one spot.
It means visitors will have more reasons to extend their stay and spend more, giving local businesses a welcome boost and creating jobs across the board. Whether it’s concerts, conferences or family outings, visitors will appreciate the convenience of shopping and dining in a safe, easy-to-access location.
From its strong gaming foundation, GrandWest is diversifying intelligently by blending conferencing, shopping and entertainment. Beyond enhancing the visitor experience, this positions the casino, and the broader economy, for consistent, sustained economic growth in the long term.
Looking ahead, GrandWest’s sizeable property means the potential for more growth is very real. “This mall is just the beginning of a new chapter for us and for South Africa’s economy. We’re committed to creating opportunities that improve lives and build prosperity,” said Naidoo.
As GrandWest raises the bar for entertainment in South Africa, it’s also opening doors for thousands of locals and transforming a popular entertainment venue into a centre of opportunity.
