Gambling surge among Ghanaian youth sparks alarm from Christian women’s group

GHACOE Women’s Ministry calls for urgent government intervention as gambling grips Ghana’s younger generation.

Ghana.- The Ghana Congress on Evangelisation (GHACOE) Women’s Ministry has issued a stark warning over the rising tide of gambling among the nation’s youth, urging the government to take swift action before the crisis deepens.

During a ceremony to induct Nana Adwoa Insaidoo as the Ministry’s 5th National President, she lamented the growing popularity of betting, lotteries and other gambling activities among young Ghanaians, describing it as a destructive trend that threatens their future.

With a firm stance against the normalisation of gambling, Insaidoo pledged to steer the Ministry toward an aggressive youth empowerment agenda.

“Our mission is to uplift vulnerable communities by equipping the youth with skills, guidance and access to job opportunities,” she said, according to MyJoyOnline.

Impact on communities

GHACOE, a non-denominational Christian movement, has long championed entrepreneurship as a tool for transformation. Since its inception in 1983, the Ministry has trained women and at-risk groups in bead-making, tie-dying and other crafts – initiatives that have already had a tangible impact on communities.

Education leader and GHACOE advocate, Theodosia Jackson, echoed the call to action, praising the Ministry’s track record in empowering women and youth.

“Rather than spending time at prayer camps searching for miracles, young people must focus their energy on productive ventures that create real opportunities,” she said.

GHACOE’s outreach spans beyond skills training. The organisation regularly visits prisons and police cells, providing not only spiritual guidance and donations but also vocational training to help inmates reintegrate into society.

As GHACOE marks a new chapter under Insaidoo’s leadership, the call is clear: more support, more action, and a united front against underage gambling.
