Ethiopia expands digital lottery sales through Coopbank mobile wallet
New service allows customers to purchase lottery tickets through Coopbank branches or the Coopay E-birr mobile wallet.
Ethiopia.- Ethiopia is expanding access to its national lottery after the Cooperative Bank of Oromia (Coopbank) launched a digital lottery sales service through its Coopay E-birr mobile wallet, opening new banking and mobile payment channels for ticket purchases.
The initiative was introduced in partnership with the Ethiopian Lottery Service and TamCom Software Solutions, enabling customers to purchase lottery tickets via the Coopay E-birr platform or through the bank’s network.
Speaking at the launch, Abdi Fekede, Acting Chief Operating Officer of Coopbank, said: “Customers can now easily access lottery sales through Coopbank or Coopay E-birr, the country’s third-largest mobile wallet with over 21 million users and more than Br4.8trn (€78bn) in transactions processed.”
The new service aims to provide a secure and convenient way for customers to participate in lottery sales, supporting Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation and expanding distribution channels for the country’s state-run lottery as part of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.
The launch took place during the bank’s Foreign Exchange Customer Awards Ceremony, where 63 winners received prizes including a BYD Seagull electric car, two electric bicycles and laptops.
