Embu authorities destroy 57 gambling machines
The operation was reportedly prompted by growing concerns about the involvement of school-going children in gambling.
Kenya.- Authorities in Embu County have destroyed 57 gambling machines seized during a multi-agency operation targeting unlicensed betting businesses in Embu East.
The machines were confiscated from gambling premises found operating without the required licences and approvals. They were later destroyed at the Runyenjes Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds after their owners failed to claim them when given an opportunity to do so.
Embu County commissioner Maurice Wanyonyi said the crackdown was part of efforts to enforce gambling regulations and prevent unlicensed operators from continuing to offer betting services.
He noted that the operation was also prompted by growing concerns about the involvement of school-going children in gambling. According to Wanyonyi, some parents have reported cases of children taking money from their homes to fund betting activities.
The commissioner said the authorities were concerned about the wider effects of unregulated gambling, particularly where gambling premises could also provide an environment for petty crime and other forms of unlawful activity.
Wanyonyi directed national government administration officials and police officers to extend the enforcement operation to other parts of the sub-county.
Embu East deputy county commissioner Jane Waruinge, who chairs the local security committee, also acknowledged the role of security officers, administrators and residents in supporting the operation.
She added that the security team will continue monitoring gambling activities across Embu East as they seek to ensure that gambling businesses operate within the requirements of the law.
