Durban July betting spotlight shifts to contenders following weights release

The publication of the official weights for the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July gives bettors fresh information to analyse ahead of final declarations, the barrier draw and South Africa’s R10m horse-racing showpiece.

South Africa.- The road to the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July has reached a key stage with the release of the official weights each contender will carry in the R10m (US$615,000) Grade 1 contest at Greyville Racecourse on July 4. With no horses added at the final supplementary entry stage, 28 contenders remain in the running.

In handicap racing, horses are assigned different weights based on their ratings, with higher-rated runners carrying more weight. The 2026 race will be run under revised handicap conditions: bottom weight has been reduced from 53kg to 52kg and top weight increased from 60kg to 62kg, restoring the full 10kg spread of a traditional open handicap.

Legal Counsel was assigned top weight of 62kg. Several contenders prominent in early betting, including Star Major, Note To Self, Wish List and Happy Verse, were also allocated weights. Star Major, an emerging three-year-old, tops the ante-post betting market following his Grade 1 Daily News 2000 victory.

The organisers said the weights provide “the first clear indication of which runners may have earned a favourable position” ahead of the showdown, which marks the 130th running of the race.

According to the official Hollywoodbets Durban July schedule, final declarations are due on June 22, followed by the barrier draw, after which a final field of 18 runners plus two reserves will be announced.
