Confederation of African Football matchdays drive betting market growth in Africa, Tanzania leads

CAF club matchdays sparked strong betting activity in Tanzania, the Republic of the Congo, Chad and Uganda, driving significant weekend uplifts.

Tanzania.- Matchdays from Confederation of African Football (CAF) club competitions drove increased betting activity across several African markets, according to sports betting data provider Blask.

Tanzania recorded the largest increase, with betting volumes rising 18.8 per cent, fuelled by high-profile CAF fixtures over the weekend. The Republic of the Congo followed with a 14.6 per cent increase, while both Chad and Uganda posted 13.7 per cent gains, reflected by Blask data, according to a Tribuna report.

The report said: “CAF matchdays lifted betting activity across several African markets, with Tanzania leading the gains at 18.8 per cent, followed by Republic of Congo, Chad and Uganda.”

The CAF is the governing body for African football, overseeing the continent’s top club competitions, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. These tournaments bring together elite teams from across Africa and are held on scheduled matchdays throughout the season, such as those recently played from February 6-8, 2026, drawing significant fan attention and engagement.

The report emphasises that these gains were tied to specific matchdays, highlighting how major CAF fixtures can stimulate short-term increases in wagering activity.

Football continues to be the dominant sport for betting across Africa. Industry surveys suggest that around 60 per cent of bettors in major African markets actively place wagers on football, highlighting the sport’s central role in regional gambling culture.

According to analysts cited in the report, the observed spikes during CAF matchdays underline the strong influence of high-profile football events on short-term betting trends.

As the CAF club season progresses, operators are expected to see further activity spikes tied to marquee fixtures, reinforcing the importance of CAF competitions in shaping Africa’s sports betting markets.
