With the windfall, the couple plans to relocate to the coast to enjoy their retirement years in peace and tranquillity.

South Africa.- A South African pensioner has claimed a R12.7 million (€624,579) Lotto Plus 2 jackpot, bringing hope for better healthcare and a peaceful retirement by the coast.

The lucky player purchased the winning ticket via the Capitec banking app, with a R20 bet using the Quick Pick option on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, for draw number 2537.

The winning numbers for the draw were: 4, 6, 17, 18, 21, and 40, with a bonus ball of 1. The jackpot prize was precisely R12,721,735 (€625,456).

The senior citizen felt immense relief upon learning of their life-changing win, revealing that they and their spouse had been struggling with serious health issues, and the financial strain had become unbearable.

He said: “Now, we’ll finally be able to access the quality care we need – this win couldn’t have come at a better time.”

The winner revealed that he first broke the news to his wife and then shared it with their son, who had been looking after them. He said: “My wife was completely thrilled, and my son – who’s been looking after us with such grace, driving us to all our medical appointments willingly – was just so relieved that we will finally be able to afford better health care.”

Looking ahead, the couple plans to relocate to the coast to enjoy their retirement years in peace and tranquillity.

According to Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza, the winner’s story is a heartwarming reminder of the positive difference the lottery can make in people’s lives. She said: “All National Lottery participants have their one big reason why they play. For this winner, he wanted to enjoy his golden years in peace without worrying about the basics. We are so glad that the Lotto Plus 2 jackpot will help him achieve that.”

All National Lottery winnings in South Africa are tax-free, and winners have 365 days from the draw date to claim their prize.

This is the second pensioner who has hit the jackpot in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a Western Cape retiree won over R13 million (€629,722) in Lotto Plus 1.
