Botswana Gambling Authority engages consumers on safer gambling at 2026 Consumer Fair

The regulator has established an information stall, where visitors can speak with officials throughout the seven-day event.

Botswana.- The Gambling Authority of Botswana has joined exhibitors at the Botswana Consumer Fair 2026, using the week-long event to engage consumers on responsible gambling, player protection and the regulator’s role in overseeing the sector.

The 19th Botswana Consumer Fair is taking place from August 24 to 30 at Fairground Holdings in Gaborone under the theme “Showcasing Botswana in Full Colour.” The Authority said it has set up an information stall where visitors can speak with officials about gambling, responsible gaming and how it carries out its regulatory functions. Its team will also provide information intended to help consumers make informed and safer choices.

As part of the outreach, the Authority is distributing pamphlets containing responsible gambling messages and information on player protection. The printed materials give visitors practical guidance they can take away from the exhibition, complementing the discussions held with officials at the stand.

The Consumer Fair provides a broad public audience for that outreach. The event has previously attracted more than 36,000 visitors and hundreds of exhibitors, with businesses using exhibition stands to showcase products, interact directly with consumers and establish commercial connections. The programme also includes business networking and other activities designed to connect businesses with potential customers and partners.

The scale of the fair makes it a significant public education opportunity for the regulator. The Botswana Gambling Authority has been a regular participant at the event for several years, where it has used its stand to engage consumers on gambling regulation and safer gambling measures. At the 2025 fair, the Authority’s CEO, Moruntshi Kemorwale, addressed visitors on the need to balance gambling-sector growth with consumer protection.

The Authority has also used the fair to promote opportunities within the regulated market. Its previous participation included information on licensing and compliance requirements, giving prospective operators and other stakeholders an opportunity to understand the regulatory process directly from the regulator.

These outreach activities fall within the Authority’s mandate under Botswana’s Gambling Act, 2012, which empowers it to regulate and control gambling, promote responsible gambling practices and mitigate the effects of problem gambling.
