Botswana Gambling Authority advocates responsible betting at Business of Sports Summit
Kemorwale said a well-regulated gambling industry can support sports development.
Botswana.- The Botswana Gambling Authority has participated in the inaugural Business of Sports Summit, joining sports industry stakeholders, government officials and business leaders to discuss strategies for building a sustainable and commercially viable sports sector in the country.
The summit focused on the role of investment, sponsorship, governance and innovation in driving the growth of sport, and examined how different industries can contribute to the sector’s long-term development.
Speaking at the event, Moruntshi Kemorwale, Gambling Authority CEO, said responsible gambling is increasingly important as sports betting plays a growing role in the sports ecosystem. He said a well-regulated gambling industry can support sports development through sponsorships and commercial partnerships, but added that growth must be accompanied by strong consumer protection measures. Responsible gambling policies, he said, help ensure that betting remains a form of entertainment while reducing the risk of gambling-related harm.
He also stressed the need for collaboration between regulators, sports organisations and licensed operators to safeguard the integrity of sporting competitions. According to Kemorwale, maintaining public trust in sport requires effective measures to prevent match-fixing, betting fraud and other activities that could compromise fair competition.
The regulator said its participation in the summit reflects its commitment to promoting safer gambling practices while supporting broader discussions on the future of sport in Botswana.
The event brought together key stakeholders from across the sports and business sectors to explore opportunities for strengthening the commercial value of sport and creating a sustainable framework for future growth.
