Botswana: The Botswana Football League (BFL) is stepping up its game with a bold move to introduce betting regulations aimed at safeguarding the integrity of local football. As the popularity of sports betting sweeps across the nation, the BFL is crafting a code of conduct for players, coaches and officials – a first for Botswana’s domestic game.
Speaking to the media, BFL Chief Executive Bennett Mamelodi confirmed that the league is finalising a regulatory framework to curb potential misconduct linked to gambling.
“We are finalising specific regulations that will address sports betting by players, coaches and officials. The regulations should be ready for adoption by the BFL Annual General Meeting at the end of June. They shall be made public,” Mamelodi told the Mmegi publication.
Botswana’s football clubs have become a fixture on sports betting platforms, but with this rise comes an undercurrent of concern. Integrity issues, match-fixing fears and regulatory loopholes have prompted urgent action from league authorities. Mamelodi, however, remains cautiously optimistic about the potential upsides.
“Betting is upon us and will be with us for some time to come. We hope to benefit commercially from their presence but in a responsible manner,” he said.
Global football betting scandals
His remarks come as global football grapples with its own betting scandals. Most notably, West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta is facing a potential lifetime ban for alleged sport-fixing. While Paqueta himself reportedly did not place any bets, friends and family are accused of wagering on incidents he may have influenced. His case is a stark reminder of the high stakes involved and the thin line players tread when gambling intersects with sport.
As Botswana football strides into the future, all eyes will be on how the league balances the financial lure of betting with the unwavering need for fair play.
