Botswana approves 29 new promotional competitions

The approved promotions cover several sectors including banking, telecommunications, beverages, retail and consumer goods.

Botswana.- Botswana’s Gambling Authority has published a new list of 29 approved promotional competitions, urging consumers to verify that any prize-based campaign they enter is authorised to help prevent fraud.

In a public notice issued on Friday, July 17, the regulator said the competitions have been approved under the Gambling Act, 2012 and the Gambling (Promotional Competitions) Regulations, 2023, allowing them to operate legally under its oversight.

The approved promotions cover several sectors including banking, telecommunications, beverages, retail and consumer goods. Companies on the list include BBS Bank, Heineken Beverages Botswana, Orange Botswana, Access Bank Botswana, Stanbic Bank Botswana, Marketing Worx, FSG Assurance, ExpressCredit, Chicken Licken, Clover Botswana and PepsiCo Botswana.

Among the authorised campaigns are BBS Bank’s Rise With BBS Future Ready, Orange Botswana’s Wheel of Fortune and Hybrid Konnecta Subscribe and Win, Access Bank Botswana’s Save & Win Campaign, Chicken Licken’s Win A TV, Heineken Beverages Botswana’s Perfect Together 2026 and Amarula Consumer Campaign, and FSG Assurance’s Stick With Us, Rest Assured. The promotions are scheduled to run between January and October 2026.

The Authority advised consumers to confirm that any promotional competition appears on the approved list before participating and encouraged them to report unauthorised campaigns through its official reporting channels.

Under Botswana’s regulations, businesses must obtain the Authority’s approval before launching promotional competitions involving an element of chance. Applicants are required to submit details of the competition, prizes, advertising materials and audit arrangements, while an independent auditor or accountant must verify the fairness of prize draws.

The notice aligns with the regulator’s broader mandate to strengthen consumer protection and improve transparency in Botswana’s gambling sector. In recent years, the Authority has expanded its regulatory oversight beyond traditional gambling by introducing licensing and application processes for digital, virtual and SMS-based competitions and games, as their use continues to grow across industries.
