Bolabet partners with UNZA to promote responsible gambling

Organisers acknowledged growing concerns around excessive betting behaviour among students and encouraged early intervention.

Zambia.- Betting operator Bolabet has partnered with the University of Zambia (UNZA) to promote responsible gambling awareness and support student sports development during the institution’s orientation activities.

The company set up an engagement stand during orientation week to interact directly with returning students. Discussions focused on responsible betting practices and the risks associated with gambling among young adults in higher learning institutions.

Speaking at the event, Bolabet Chief Financial Officer Ray Kumenda said gambling has become a growing concern within universities, making awareness initiatives necessary. Students were advised that gambling is not a job or a reliable way to earn money and should only be treated as entertainment. They were cautioned against using tuition fees, bursaries or essential living funds for betting.

The awareness drive also addressed gambling addiction and its potential mental health impacts. Organisers acknowledged growing concerns around excessive betting behaviour among students and encouraged early intervention. Learners were directed to UNZA’s counselling centre for support if they experience distress or loss of control related to gambling.

Research conducted in Zambia indicates high participation rates in sports betting among university students, with associated risks including financial strain, academic challenges and psychological stress. These findings have prompted calls within the sector for stronger education and harm-reduction measures targeting young adults.

Beyond awareness messaging, Bolabet confirmed sponsorship of university tournaments in football, basketball and netball. The company provided team kits as part of its support for campus sports participation and student engagement.

In addition, the betting operator, in collaboration with Gameid, extended access to Bola Radio to interested UNZA students. The platform offers practical exposure to sports commentary, journalism and broadcasting, allowing students to gain hands-on media experience.

The partnership forms part of broader industry efforts to balance commercial betting operations with responsible gambling advocacy, particularly within youth and university environments. University representatives and student leaders were invited to take part in continued awareness and engagement initiatives linked to the programme.
