ALGA commends North West Gambling Board’s crackdown on illegal gambling
According to the association, effective enforcement plays an important role in safeguarding children and other vulnerable groups from exposure to illegal gambling.
South Africa.- The African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) has praised the North West Gambling Board (NWGB) for its enforcement efforts against illegal gambling, describing strong regulatory action as key to protecting vulnerable communities and preserving the integrity of Africa’s regulated gaming sector.
In a LinkedIn post on Monday, August 3, the industry body said illegal gambling remains a persistent challenge across African jurisdictions, requiring regulators to maintain robust enforcement measures to combat unlicensed operators and reduce the risks associated with illegal gambling activities.
ALGA specifically commended the North West Gambling Board’s recent actions under acting chief executive officer Boitumelo Qalinge, saying the regulator had demonstrated a strong commitment to tackling illegal gambling through decisive enforcement operations.
According to the association, effective enforcement plays an important role in safeguarding children and other vulnerable groups from exposure to illegal gambling while supporting the growth of regulated gaming markets across the continent.
The endorsement comes after the NWGB destroyed hundreds of illegal gambling machines seized from tuck shops and informal businesses during enforcement operations across the province.
ALGA added that measures to combat illegal gambling will feature prominently at its upcoming CEOs Forum, where regulators and industry stakeholders will discuss enforcement strategies and other regulatory priorities under the theme, “The Black Table.”
The association said the forum will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas on strengthening cooperation and improving responses to illegal gambling, which continues to pose regulatory and consumer protection challenges in several African markets.
