Icahn’s appeals could ruin Atlantic City

As the former owner of the Trump Taj Mahal appealed 2017 assessments, New Jersey’s governor said that it would hurt the city.

US.- Carl Icahn, former owner of the Trump Taj Mahal and Trump Plaza, is asking millions of dollars in property tax appeals. The magnate opened appeals on both of his ex properties for the years 2014 to 2017.

As Press of Atlantic City described, the complaints don’t specify how much money he’s asking from the city, but the latest similar appeals establish that they’ve been extremely expensive for the money that the city currently has. A spokesperson for the Department of Community Affairs of New Jersey said that they’re still discussing how to proceed, but they can’t specify any details. Jeffrey Chiesa, state overseer, said earlier this month that Icahn and his representatives were in talks about trying to resolve outstanding monetary issues regarding his casinos.

Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie said last week that they’re willing to reach an agreement with the former casino owner just the same way they negotiated with Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in February, when the state paid US$72 million. “But what everyone needs to understand is there’s not much money left here,” Christie said. There are multiple officials who are asking Icahn to help the city “for once” instead of hurting it with the appeals.
